Chapter Eight

Cool night air felt good against Abby’s cheeks. She lifted her face to the gentle breeze, glad for the jacket to keep her body warm.

Other than the light shining through the window in the kitchen, no other lights had been turned on. The stars glowed brightly enough she could see all the way past the barn to where Parker’s horse, Jasper, grazed in the field.

“We were about to send a search party into the house to see what was keeping you two.” Lily asked from where she perched on the porch rail with Trace beside her.

“Sorry. We got carried away talking,” Abby said.

“Thank you for cleaning the kitchen,” Rosalyn said from her seat on the porch swing. “We’re glad you joined us. We couldn’t ask for better weather after last night’s storm.”

“I, for one, am grateful for last night’s storm,” Lily said.

“Me, too,” Abby murmured softly.

“We needed the rain,” Trace said. “Another week without it, along with the cooler weather, and the grass would’ve died, and we’d have to feed the animals hay sooner.”

“That little bit of rain will buy us another week or two of grazing,” Lily said.

Parker led Abby down the steps and out into the yard before he stopped and looked up at the sky.

Abby tipped her head back and stared at the bright stars, thankful to be outside where she could stretch her arms and legs and breathe clear, crisp air.

“I’m sorry we didn’t make any more progress toward finding the others today,” Trace said.

“I am, too,” Abby said. “I hope they’re okay and can hold out a little longer until we can get to them.”

“We all hope the same,” Lily said. “I can’t imagine what their families are going through. I’d be tempted to tell them you know they’re alive.”

“I thought the same.” Abby shook her head. “But they’re better off not knowing. What if we don’t get there in time? If they’re moved to another location or worse? We’d have given their families hope only to be crushed again.”

“Good point,” Rosalyn said. “It must have been horrible being trapped in cages. I’m amazed you were able to break free.”

“That took a great deal of courage,” Trace said.

Abby shook her head. “Desperation. By day three, I was starting to lose hope that we were ever going to be rescued. I figured it was up to us. Then the storm came and the thunder helped drown out the noise I made. So, yes, I was grateful for last night’s storm. And though I can’t retrace my footsteps, neither can anyone track them here.”

Rosalyn pushed to her feet. “I’m headed for a shower and bed. Tomorrow will be a busy day for us all. While you guys are flying drones, I have the farrier coming to work on the horses’ hooves. I would reschedule, but he’s booked out two months in advance. Once I get the horses into the stalls, I’ll come help however I can.”

“We shouldn’t need you out there,” Trace said. “We’re going to be looking at a computer screen and tracking against the map.
